Ötzi the Iceman
was a trendsetter back in 3,300 BC.  When Ötzi was unearthed in 1991 in the mountains of northern Italy, archaeologists uncovered his wardrobe that included a leather loincloth.  We’re sure that piece of clothing was some of the best performance gear at the time.  Fortunately, technology enabled men’s underwear to evolve over the centuries.  In the Middle Ages, the loincloth gave way to braies, chausses, and codpieces.
It was not until the 1700s that mass produced underwear was available to the average “Joe.”  The union suit and long johns were popular during the last quarter of the 19th century.

In 1874, C.F. Bennett invented the jockstrap to literally support bicycle jockeys riding the cobblestone streets. Imagine how these delivery men’s performance increased with this simple piece of cloth.  Bennett’s company was the Bike Company.  Most men can probably remember wearing a Bike jockstrap in middle and high school PE classes and athletics.

It wasn’t until 1935 that the first modern underwear design was introduced by a company that would eventually be named Jockey. These “jockey” briefs provided the support that only jockstraps of the past provided.

In the 2011, a self-professed underwear fanatic who was frustrated with the existing shopping options had an epiphany.  We’re in the 21st century.  Yet men have shopped and bought underwear the same way for too long – either going to large department store or a mass retailer and finding the same brands.

Underwear Nation shipped its first subscription boxes in April 2011.  The simple mission was to expose the average “Joe” with options and wanted more than the same whitey-tighties that many us men grew up wearing.   Our many subscribers discovered that in addition to looking stylish, the underwear was extremely comfortable, especially in their active lives.

Underwear Nation changed ownership but the new team brings the same philosophy of giving men options.  We continue to source gear from around the globe that enable men to improve their performance in all that they do. We also want to educate men on the importance of having the right gear for the right job.

We know that underwear can often be overlooked as critical gear until you have that moment.  You know what we’re talking about…your having to continually pull those uncomfortable cotton briefs that kept sagging as you sweat your balls off.  Do you remember the discomfort, and how distracted you were?

When someone scoffs, “Underwear? Important gear?”  you’ll simply shake your head and smile. Peak performance is achieved when you have the right gear and the right attitude.  But you knew that already.
